Welcome Aboard and Mission Outline

First off... Welcome!! I hope that you will find your experience here enjoyable. I'm not a journalist, nor do I claim to know much about the art, but I hope you will find my content both entertaining and informative. You can learn about me through my profile.

So, the blog.. What's it about? Squids and cyber stuff? Yeah, you got it, but allow me to provide you with more detail. This blog's mission is to teach and entertain while maintaining focus on information technology. I want to show you how to do some cool stuff like automate your home and life, protect yourself online, and fix computer problems. If you already know something about IT, then I'd like to share ideas and learn from you.

That explains the cyber part. What's the deal with the squids? A few reasons really. Here's a list:

1. I'm a Navy veteran. It's no secret that military lingo includes some very affectionate names for other branches and even communities within the same branch. I don't swear (I know, unusual for a Sailor) so I will refrain from using some of the more vulgar ones which have had their use discouraged by the leadership in recent years. One of the terms used by the Army and other branches when referring to Sailors is "squid". While it could be used to deride, I think that most of the time that is not the case.
2. Squids are very smart creatures. A squid can work itself out of a fishing net, crawl its way across the deck of a ship, squeeze through a chock seemingly too small for its body and jump back into the ocean. Squids can grip things and use tools. They can even open a jar. Lastly, squids have a number of natural defenses and are good at cloaking themselves, a very important analogy for anyone interested in cyber security.
3. Alliteration makes it easy to remember along with a short web address. cybersquids.com is easier to remember than something like natesincrediblyawesomeandproffessionalblogoncomputerstuff.network which is both long, complicated, and has an uncommon web extension. So, yeah, it's simple marketing that works. I'd be lying if I told you I don't want to make money. Of course I do, but I promise to never charge for content. The internet is free. Libraries are also free. So, I see no point to charge you for info I got for free. I appreciate your support, and if you want to give me your hard earned dollars, then I want it to be for something of value outside of the content.

So, there you have it, but I want to say one last thing before I go. For those that know me personally, something that I say a lot is "I work hard to be lazy." What I mean by that is I work to automate my life through technology and processes so I can do the things I enjoy and leave the rest to a machine or paid help. My dad always put it this way, "Work smarter, not harder!" The future is bright, and bots will someday do many of the menial tasks that we as humans do now. Technology is not perfect, but overall it allows me to slack off and still finish a job and finish it well at that. It's really amazing when you think about it, and that is what I want to share with you in the posts ahead. Thank you again for visiting. I hope you will keep reading.

"If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first six of them sharpening my axe." - Abraham Lincoln
